Colour: vivid green straw colour
Nose: The nose already give an indication of a wine with a nice full-bodied palate. Aromas of orange peel and citrus integrate with a balanced nuttiness from the wood. The nose is fruit driven with wood flavours less pronounced and subtle.
Palate: This is a full bodied wine with hefty alcohol level. The initial impact in the mouth is an explosion of fresh fruit, acidity and a hint of creaminess, typical of a young wine. Fresh citrus flavours stand out although the wood characters are more pronounced than on the nose. The wine has width that fill the mouth and tannins that will soften more with maturation. It leaves a lingering dry aftertaste with hints of marmalade. Although enjoyable now, this wine will only improve with maturation.
Vinification: Grapes were harvested at almost 25°B (very ripe) to capture the beste possible mouth feel and flavours. Only the free run juice from static drainers were used. Wild yeast from the vineyard took the fermentation down to about 16°B before selected yeast (VL1) were added to make sure that it ferment to dryness. The wild yeast add a layer of complexity in both flavour and mouthfeel. Battonage every 3 weeks and wine racked of fermentation lees after three months. After 14 months in barrel the best selection were blended and bottled. About 43% new oak and 43% third fill barrel were blended with 14% fresh wine from the 2015 vintage. This blending added freshness and give the wine the impression that it is younger than expected from the 2014 vintage. Initially only 300 bottles were bottled with expected future bottlings to increase in volume.
